Infiltration from Surface Water Bodies

The Boundary Element Method is used to study two-dimensional infiltration from a surface canal through an underlying layer. The difficulty of the problem rests on the determination of the free surface; this is handled by an iteration process along inclined lines, which allow for displacement of the initial guess nodes. A detailed sensitivity analysis was carried out for the number of nodes and the initial guess for the free surface. The results obtained appear to be more accurate than previously published nonanalytical solutions and are in excellent agreement with an available analytical solution for infinitely deep layers.
