Zusammenfassung

Im Juni/Juli 1981 berichteten US-Gesundheitsbehörden über eine neuartige Häufung von Pneumocystis-Pneumonie bzw. Kaposi-Sarkom bei vorher gesunden männlichen Homosexuellen in Los Angeles bzw. New York [14]. Als gemeinsame Ursache stellte sich ein schwerer irreversibler T-Zelldefekt heraus. Die Berichte wurden initial als Hinweis auf einen exogenen toxischen Faktor gedeutet. Eine toxische Immunsuppression z. B. durch Amylnitrit erschien durchaus plausibel. Das Auftreten von Partnererkrankungen sowie Erkrankungen bei heterosexuellen Haitianern, bei mit Faktor UIII substituierten Hämophilen machten es unübersehbar, daß offenbar ein übertragbares Agens — in erster Linie ein Virus — die Ursache der rätselhaften Immunsuppression sein mußte. Aus dieser Frühzeit stammt auch der Name AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome); es liegt jedoch offenbar eine einheitliche Erkrankung und kein polyätiologisches Syndrom vor.
