Abstract

There is now strong evidence that arterial injury plays an important role in promoting atherogenesis. Thus, the earliest lesions of human atherosclerosis exhibit definite signs of injury and repair even before the accumulation of massive lipid deposits. Furthermore, experimental lesions duplicating all anatomical components of the human disease have been produced in several vertebrates through the application of either substantial and protracted lipemia alone or only slight and relatively brief lipemia together with arterial injury of immune, nutritional, chemical, metabolic or physical character.
