Abstract

The safety and efficacy of three different dosage regimens of ciprofloxacin (250, 500, and 750 mg orally every 12 hours for seven days) were compared in a prospective, controlled, randomized, double-blind study. Enrolled were 161 patients (110 who were évaluable for efficacy) with complicated urinary tract infection defined as a bacterial count of at least 105 colony-forming units/ml of urine in the presence of structural or functional abnormality of the urinary tract. Cure rates five to nine days after treatment were 84 percent, 87 percent, and 86 percent in the 250-, 500-, and 750-mg dosage groups, respectively, with no significant difference between groups. This suggests that 250 mg of ciprofloxacin twice daily is sufficient for the treatment of urinary tract infection. All three dosage regimens were well tolerated.
