Zusammenfassung
Altern bedeutet ein allmähliches Schwinden der Widerstandskraft unseres Kürpers gegen äußere und innere Stürfaktoren. Die Ursachen dieses Vorgangs, welcher die einzelnen Organe und Zellsysteme unseres Kürpers in verschiedenem Maße betrifft, werden heute vorwiegend auf Stufe der Zelle gesucht. Es ist bekannt, daß somatische Zellen, z.B. menschliche Fibroblasten, sich auch unter optimalen In-vitro-Bedingungen nur rund 50mal teilen künnen und dann absterben (8). Man nimmt an, daß sich allmählich Schäden im Genom der Zellen anhäufen, die von den Reparationsmechanismen mit der Zeit nicht mehr behoben werden künnen, so daß die Stoffwechselfunktionen sich zunehmend verschlechtern und schließlich erlüschen. Aber nicht alle Zellen altern: Einzellige Organismen künnen sich unbeschränkt teilen, ebenso gelten Zellen der Keimbahn potentiell als „unsterblich“. Offensichtlich verfügen sie über wesentlich besser ausgebildete Reparationsmechanismen als somatische Zellen. Auch Krebszellen teilen sich kontinuierlich, ohne Alterungserscheinungen unterworfen zu sein. Die zunehmende Häufigkeit vieler maligner Tumoren im Alter stellt eine fundamentale Frage der Altersforschung dar.
