Abstract
An escalating level of clinical research activity and debate surrounds the issue of treatment strategies for severe sepsis. The intensity of these efforts reflects the rapidity with which the mechanistic insights of basic biology have been translated into clinical application. Inherent in such discussions are concerns as to the fundamental parameters which meaningfully reflect both the severity and outcome of the disease process [1–9]. It remains to be determined which, if any, currently available risk assessment methodology should be utilized for the initial stratification of disease severity. In an era of limited resources, methodologies that enhance disease specific diagnosis and more precisely identify outcome risk will be increasingly necessary.
