Abstract
The Aquitaine basin occupies about 50000 km2 on the mainland. It is bounded to the east by the French Massif Central and to the south by the Pyrénées. It extends seawards on the South Armorican margin as far as the Bay of Biscay, where oceanic crust occurs. The Paleozoic basement rocks of the Aquitaine are only known from boreholes and consist mainly of terrigenous deposits ranging from Late Cambrian up to Permian. Subordinate calcareous sections occur in the Devonian and possibly in the Early Carboniferous.
