Abstract
Acute renal failure is an increasingly common manifestation of multiple organ failure (MOF) in critically ill patients now treated in intensive care units (ICU). The last decade has seen the progressive introduction of new treatment techniques which have all but superseded peritoneal dialysis and intermittent hemodialysis. All of these techniques are based on the continuous application of filtration therapy. In the form of continuous arteriovenous hemofiltration (CAVH), or continuous veno-venous hemofiltration (CVVH), either with dialysis (CAVHD/CVVHD) or without, these modalities are associated with excellent uremic control, hemodynamic stability and volume removal. These techniques are relatively new, and advances are continuously being made in understanding their impact and potential. A number of such advances are reviewed in this chapter.
