Abstract
Analyses of ductile failure are discussed where the material’s constitutive description allows for the possibility of a complete loss of stress carrying capacity, with the associated creation of new free surface. No additional failure criterion is employed so that fracture arises as a natural outcome of the deformation history. Attention is directed toward circumstances where the inherent rate sensitivity of plastic flow plays a role. Numerical computations of ductile failure in notched bars and of dynamic crack growth are reviewed.
