Approaches to the Genetic Mapping of Pea

Part of the book series: Modern Methods of Plant Analysis ((MOLMETHPLANT,volume 16))

Abstract

Genetics is a subject rich in theory, and is powerfully predictive. Genetic maps have been constructed for many organisms, and some maps have been in existence for more than 70 years. In pea, the cosegregation of allelic types had been reported, and called ‘gametic coupling’, before the term ‘linkage’ had universal acceptance (deVilmorin and Bateson 1911). The obvious questions thus arise as to why anyone should write about this subject as a ‘modern method’, and what insight can be gained from genetic mapping in pea or any other crop.
