Abstract
The ground state of the alternating spin 1/2 Heisenberg chain with couplings J(> 0) and J′ is studied. This model interpolates the S=1 and S=1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains continuously. The behavior of the string order and energy gap indicates that the ground state over the whole range −∞ ≤ J′< J can be regarded as a single phase. The physical picture of the ground state and the first excited state is also discussed.
