Abstract

According to the American Cancer Society an estimated 30 500 new cases of and 8350 deaths from oral cancer (buccal cavity and pharynx) occurred in the United States in 1990. About 40% of annual deaths due to oral cancer result from local failure (Rubin and Carter 1976). With smoking and use of alcohol expanding worldwide, the incidence of head and neck tumors is still increasing. Standard therapy, including surgery, radiotherapy (RT), or chemotherapy (ChT) alone or in combination, still fails to sufficiently control local, regional, and systemic spread of this malignant disease.
