Abstract

Peroxidases are heme enzymes which catalyze reactions of hydrogen peroxide and certain other oxidants. The physiological mechanisms of these enzymes involve two oxidized intermediates known as compounds I and II. Compound I is formed by a two-electron oxidation of the resting enzyme and contains an Fe(IV) porphyrin π-radical cation. A one-electron reduction of compound I forms the compound II intermediate which contains an Fe(IV) heme.
