Abstract
There has been considerable debate about the utility of prognostic factors for breast cancer; yet, in one way or another they are routinely used by many physicians and patients every day to make a variety of decisions. We concentrate here on three areas in which the decision-making process could be improved by a better understanding of prognostic factors: (a) identification of women who will eventually develop breast cancer, (b) prediction of clinical outcome of patients who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, (c) prediction of benefit from adjuvant therapy for specific breast cancer patients.
William L. McGuire was a Clinical Research Professor of the American Cancer Society until his death on March 25, 1992. Supported in part by NIH Grant CA30195.
