Abstract

Osteosarcoma is by far the more frequent of the two common bone tumours occurring in childhood, and this chapter deals essentially with this type of tumour. The other type, chondrosarcoma, is dealt with specifically in a brief final section. Although osteosarcoma has been reported in a child of 3 years and can occur at almost any time during adult life, the peak age is between 10 and 20 years. Many of the tumours which occur in later life complicate Paget’s disease, which does not occur in children. The annual incidence has been reported as 1.6–2.8 per million children under 15 years. It occurs more commonly in males (male to female ratio, 1.6:1).
