Abstract

Estimates of global animal methane emissions have ranged from 60 (Crutzen, 1983) to 160 Tg/yr (Ehhalt and Schmidt, 1978). The potential of a significant animal contribution to atmospheric methane has been recognized for some time. Approximately 95 percent of animal methane emissions are accounted for by ruminants. The emphasis in this paper will therefore be primarily focused on these animals.
