Abstract
In 1989 there were nearly 50000 newly diagnosed cases of bladder cancer in the United States and this disease directly accounted for more than 10000 deaths. Given its prevalence and impact, one would surmise that great strides would have been made in the understanding and selective treatment of this cancer over the last 30 years. In 1959 Dr. Jewett stated: “in no other viscus in the body has the treatment of malignant disease remained so controversial as in the bladder.” This comment unfortunately still holds true today.
