Abstract
We have grown a series of epitaxial Co/Pd (111) superlattices on single-crystal GaAs(110) substrates by Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE). Simultaneously, we have deposited polycrystalline Co/Pd multilayers on Si substrates mounted alongside the GaAs for direct comparisons of epitaxial and non-epitaxial films produced under identical conditions. The structural properties of these multilayers as determined by low and high energy electron diffraction (LEED and RHEED), low and high-angle x-ray diffraction, and Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) are discussed. Vibrating Sample Magnetometry (VSM) measurements reveal significant enhancement of the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and coercivity in the epitaxial superlattices. Implications of the structural influences on the magnetic behavior are presented.
