Abstract

One of the most important challenges to reconstructive knee surgery is the preservation of a maximum amount of healthy meniscal tissue. The degenerative changes in the knee joint that follow total meniscectomy were vividly described by Fairbank in 1948, and “Fairbank’s changes” were subsequently confirmed by other authors (Fairbank 1948; Jackson 1968; Krause et al. 1976; Tapper and Hoover 1969).
