Abstract
Methods for the treatment of acute injuries of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and medial collateral ligament (MCL) range from purely conservative management to repair of the MCL complex alone or the concomitant repair of both ligaments (Fetto and Marshall 1978; Hughston and Barrett 1985; Jokl et al. 1984; Warren and Marshall 1978 b). Fetto and Marshall (1978) state that the good late results following the nonoperative or operative treatment of isolated MCL lesions depend mainly on the integrity of the ACL, so they emphasize the importance of repairing the ACL in addition to the MCL for combined injuries of both structures. Warran and Marshall (1978 a, b) also place restoration of the cruciate ligament above the repair of the extraarticular restraints.
