Abstract

A review of the literature on the knee joint reveals significant discrepancies in the usage of many terms and definitions (American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons 1984; American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons 1985; American Medical Association 1966, Apley 1980, Feagin 1988; Hughston and Barrett 1983; Hughston et al. 1976a, b; Kennedy et al. 1978; W.Müller 1983; Noyes and Grood 1988; Wang and Walker 1974). These inconsistencies can cause confusion in attempts at communication.
