Part of the book series: Lecture Notes in Engineering ((LNENG,volume 63))

Abstract

The use of advanced materials (ceramics, fibres, semiconductors) will be indispensable to future developments of numerous industrial branches. It is especially the material behaviour which for this reason has to be carefully considered in order to find optimal layouts of components and design variants. i.e. various kinds of failure and reliability criteria must be taken into account. Thus, the common deterministic optimization has to be extended by discrete and stochastic algorithms. For that reason. particular material values and their laws have to be described by means of distribution functions. In this connection it is important to establish appropriate stochastic optimization algorithms. Latest results are shown for a special component made of glass-ceramics as part of a large mirror.
