Nonoperative Correction of Foot Deformities

  • Chapter

Abstract

Foot deformities are widespread throughout the world. A deformed foot changes the gait and interferes with limb function. In addition, severe deformities require orthopedic footwear. Such difficulties cause patients both physical and emotional distress. Traditional methods of dealing with foot deformities are complex and traumatic; they usually involve shortening the foot — often with many operative interventions — and are not always successful. It therefore seemed worthwhile to devise newer and more effective methods of treating orthopedic foot problems.
