Abstract

Root knot is a major disease of tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum (L) Mill.) caused by nematodes belonging to the genus Meloidogyne. They are responsible for marked reduction in tomato yields and sometimes for complete crop failures in many parts of the world. Although over 60 species of Meloidogyne have been described, the most common species attacking tomatoes are M. incognita (Kofoid and White) Chitwood, M. javanica (Treub) Chitwood, M. arenaria (Neal) Chitwood, and M. hapla Chitwood.
