Abstract

Interstitial radiotherapy of early prostatic cancer with iodine-125 is an accepted treatment alternative for patients in which either radical operation or external beam irradiation is indicated. Pioneer work with this method has been done by Hilaris, Whitmore et al. since 1972 (Whitmore et al. 1972). Their therapeutic concept is based on the ideal radiation properties of iodine-125 as a low-energy γ-ray-emitting radionuclide with a long half-life. These characteristics provide for a sustained continuous irradiation of the tumor with a low dose to the adjacent tissues. Due to the low depth of penetration of the radiation, precise positioning of the seeds is a prerequisite for perfect dose distribition and good local tumor control.
