Abstract

Radiochemotherapy (external irradiation plus simultaneous chemotherapy) for anal canal cancer was introduced by Nigro et al. (1974) as a preoperative regimen prior to radical surgery and has been further developed to a primary treatment with the aim of function preservation. In Erlangen, we started a radiochemotherapy-based treatment protocol for anal canal carcinoma in 1985. The following article summarizes our preliminary results.
