Abstract

The electron and photon stimulated desorption (ESD and PSD) of ions and molecules from the surface of van der Waals solids or physisorbed layers has been investigated by several groups for two decades in relation to the fundamental studies of physisorbed system by low-energy electron diffraction, Auger electron spectroscopy, etc. and the practical problem of outgassing in a cryopump. Recently, ESD and PSD phenomena at the surface of solid rare gases attracted the interest of many people. It became obvious that excitons play an important and main role in DIET (desorption induced by electronic transitions) of rare gas solid.
