Abstract
The word “science” comes from the Latin scientia which means knowledge and, by common usage, science has come to mean knowledge of nature. Actually I prefer understanding of nature, its forces and its materials. These are the two principal items of nature which make up the material universe. There are also space and time which I will not deal with tonight. Science is a part of our culture, the definition of which is the state of advancement of civilization. So, science is as much a part of our culture as is art or music or writing or any other intellectual activity.
