Summary

The behaviour of a wave packet in the boundary layer may differ significantly from that of simple waves forming the packet. One of the most important manifestations of this difference as it was established by Gaster [1] is that, with other conditions being equal, the wave packet leads to a somewhat earlier laminar-turbulent transition than in case of an isolated Tollmien-Schlichting wave. The present paper discusses some features of three-dimensional wave packets developing on a concave surface, and particularly the possibility of their upstream propagation in the boundary layer.
