An Evaluation of Stability-Based Methods for Transition of Three-Dimensional Flows

  • Conference paper
Laminar-Turbulent Transition

Summary

The current eigenvalue procedures which assume the relationship between the two wave numbers α and β in the Orr-Sommerfeld equation to predict transition in three-dimensional flows are evaluated against the saddle-point method of Cebeci and Stewartson which computed this relationship by requiring ∂α/∂β to be real. Studies for an infinite swept wing indicate that all procedures agree well with the experimental data. The results for a prolate spheroid, however, indicate that the saddle-point method leads to satisfactory results whereas that based on an assumed relationship between a and β does not.
