Part of the book series: Recent Results in Cancer Research ((RECENTCANCER,volume 119))

Abstract

It is frequently stated in the literature that inflammatory disease of the breast is indistinguishable from carcinoma (Raju et al. 1986). With careful correlation of clinical signs and symptoms, and mammographic and sonographic findings, a high rate of accuracy can be achieved in the diagnosis of inflammatory diseases (80%–85% in our experience). The ability to recognize benign disease, prevent unnecessary procedures, and insure prompt institution of proper therapy is most important. As increasing numbers of patients are referred for mammography, more patients with inflammatory disease will be seen.
