The Investigation of Mass Transport Through Polyethylene with Concentration Waves

Summary

The investigation of mass transport is of interest since it provides information on the parameters involved in the process of permeation, diffusion and solution and so also on the structure of polymers. Applications are in the field of material characterization and nondestructive testing. Transport processes can be analysed both by the reaction to step functions (the conventional method) or by the stationary response to a periodical input. The latter is the general concept of concentration waves. In this paper we report on measurements where the concentration of the diffusing gas was modulated in a sinusoidal way. From the observed phase shift between the input (the concentration variation) and the output (the permeation rate) the diffusion coefficient can be calculated.
