Abstract

The concept of receptor-mediated gamete adhesion is widely accepted today to account for species specificity observed during fertilization in animals. Although this concept dates back more than 70 years to F.R. Lillie (Farley, 1982), macromolecules involved in gamete adhesion have been identified only recently. Here, I review some aspects of research on the mouse egg receptor for sperm, a zona pellucida glycoprotein called ZP3, that has been studied extensively at both the cellular and molecular level. Such studies have revealed that ZP3 regulates early events of the fertilization pathway in mice, including gamete recognition and adhesion (binding), and sperm exocytosis (acrosome reaction).
