Abstract
The life of many higher organisms starts with the time when two gametes, an egg and a spermatozoon, fuse each other. At that moment, several processes, for example acrosome reaction, sperm-egg binding, exocytosis of cortical granules occur and the dramatic event, fertilization is completed. On the other hand, it is true that there must be several prologues; maturation and spawning of gametes are prerequisite processes for the accomplishment of fertilization. The former problem, that of oocyte maturation has been recognized to involve the problem of cell division and in recent years there is a growing body of data that should help to permit understanding of the mechanism underlying the critical events. The latter problem, that of the spawning of gametes, and especially the change of sperm behavior on spawning has been investigated for a long time.
