Abstract

This survey of the solid-state chemistry of the copper oxides shows that they exhibit very complex nonstoichiometry phenomena, due to the Jahn-Teller effect of copper and to its ability to present several valence states — Cu(I), Cu(II), Cu(III) — and consequently multiple coordinations. Although the relationship between the crystal chemistry of these materials and their superconducting properties is so far not understood, we would like to discuss here very briefly some keywords which characterize these oxides and will probably play a role in superconductivity.
