Abstract
The adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is characterized by a rapid clinical onset of dyspnea, cyanosis, restlessness and usually a hyperdynamic circulatory condition. Associated are diffuse bilateral opacities on chest X-ray, pulmonary arterial hypertension with normal capillary wedge pressure, decreased pulmonary compliance, arterial hypoxemia, and respiratory alkalosis. Respiratory acidosis is a near terminal event and rarely seen in early ARDS.
