Pathophysiology of Erythropoiesis in Renal Diseases

  • Conference paper

Abstract

The role of erythropoietin in the regulation of erythropoiesis is well documented. Conclusive evidence exists that the kidney is a major source of erythropoietin. Not surprisingly, anemia or secondary erythrocytosis accompanies renal diseases. Anemia is a regular feature of chronic renal failure and its primary cause is decreased erythropoietin production, while secondary erythrocytosis is caused by increased erythropoietin.

This study was supported by a grant from the Serbian Research Foundation. The research was also supported in part by a grant from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI-22469), USA, and conducted at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory (Department of Energy contract DE-AC03-76SF00098 to the University of California).
