Abstract

Considerable research has been recently conducted in developing and evaluating methods for optimum design of structural systems. Methods of design sensitivity analysis for static and dynamic response, shape optimization, and nonlinear response have been developed. In order to realize the full potential of these new developments, a highly flexible, user-friendly and interactive software environment is needed. Database design and management techniques, expert system techniques, and interactive graphics techniques can play a major role in creating a software environment for practical applications. The paper presents the state of the art in several of the above mentioned areas. Role of designer interaction in design of structures for static and dynamic response is explored and its advantages are discussed. A few simple example problems are used in presenting and evaluating the techniques.
