Abstract
The cultivated wheats belong to the tribe Triticeae of the grass family, the Gramineae. The basic chromosome number in the Triticeae is seven, suggesting that the species are all derived from one basic ancestor in the distant past. However, as a result of a long period of evolution, the Triticeae is now a very diverse complex. It can be divided into subtribes, two of which are the Triticineae which includes Triticum and Secale (rye), and the Hordeinae which includes Hordeum (barley) and Elymus (wild rye).
