Aerobic Dive Limit

Abstract

It seems to me that one of the most important objectives of diving physiology would be the ability to predict the limit of duration of aerobic dives by aquatic tetrapods. Such predictability would be a valuable asset in understanding the behavior of the animals and their ecology. In addition, such a prediction capacity would require a considerable understanding of the physiology of the animals, particularly partitioning of O2 stores and their management. The following chapter with its crude estimates indicates in a broad way the strengths and weaknesses of our present information on diving physiology and management of O2 stores.
