Bone Transplantation

Abstract

Hydroxyapatite (HA) has been proven by numerous authors to be excellently biocompatible and bioactive. Bone ingrowth into porous HA, however, depends on pore size. As we could show by own experiments, low-porosity HA exhibits perfect bone ongrowth but only marginal ingrowth. An implant with small pores acts as a barrier and hinders rather than promotes bone healing of the defect.
