Abstract

In spite of the striking successes of modern observational astronomy — the discovery and investigation, by means of artificial satellites, of x-ray sources, quasistellar objects (quasars), radio pulsars, and achievements in the study of individual stars, galaxies, and clusters of galaxies — comparatively few facts are known at the present time about the global structure of the universe, and these must be extracted from observations for the most part by means of a statistical analysis. We shall enumerate the most important of these facts.
