Abstract

This neoplasm is often an incidental finding at necropsy and in its early stages may not be grossly evident even when the heart is cut to reveal the interiors of the chambers. The early lesion consists of a firm, white to gray coating over all or a part of the lining of one chamber, most often the left ventricle. More advanced tumors are grossly evident as firm , grayish-white masses that partially fill one or more chambers and diffusely invade the myocardium. Rarely, the tumor may grow through the myocardium and expand as an exophytic mass on the external surface of the heart. Infiltrative growth may then extend along the major blood vessels within and beyond the mediastinal cavity to involve the lungs and soft tissues of the neck and head, in some exceptional cases extending as far as the orbit. Photographs illustrating both early and advanced lesions have been published (Ivankovic 1976).
