Abstract

There are essentially three ways autoimmunity may develop. Cytotoxic cells which are functionally deleted by the immune system under normal circumstances are transformed into active cells by an unknown event. Another mechanism is the interaction of cytotoxic cells with cross reactive antigens, e. g. drugs or virus similar to autoantigens. A third pathway to autoimmune mediated destruction is, that crossreactive antigens are immobilized on target cell membranes.
