Abstract
Intermittent mandatory ventilation (IMV) was introduced as a weaning technique by Downs in 1973 [1]. It allows the patients to breathe spontaneously in-between or simultaneous with mandatory breaths delivered from the mechanical ventilator. This was first accomplished by connecting a continuous flow CPAP system to the inspiratory line of the ventilator.
