Dual Oximetry

As critical care medicine has developed, patient monitoring capability has become increasingly complex. Variables relevant to the patient’s disease process preferably should be monitored continuously in an on-line fashion, to allow repeated assessment and rapid adjustments of ongoing therapy. Monitoring should not subject the patient to a significant risk of complications, and cost should be proportional to the value of the information provided. The ability of the observer, physician or nurse, to process information is easily overwhelmed when the patient’s vital functions are fragmented into a simultaneous display of multiple variables. Therefore, an ideal monitoring system should combine and analyze data automatically, and present it to the observer in a form that has direct physiologic significance and immediate applicability.
