Abstract

Friction forces manifesting at structural joints and interfaces are an important source of energy dissipation. When materials with low inherent damping are used in environments offering essentially no aerodynamic damping, the ability of the structure to withstand vibratory stress due to sudden maneuvers etc. depends almost entirely on the extent of friction damping. Therefore, it is important to understand the parameters that influence this phenomenon so that guidelines can be established for the design of structural components.
