The human complement system, comprised of at least 20 distinct components and a number of cell surface receptors for its activated products has been partially characterized and its genes localized to specific chromosomes (Table 1). The workshop reviewed the nature of known complement deficiencies and the diseases associated with them (Table 1). Compound deficiencies were reviewed by Dr. Hauptmann (Table 2).
