Lupus Erythematosus and Its Subsets

  • Conference paper
Dermatology in Five Continents

Summary

The clinical, histological, immunopathological, and serological manifestations of patients with a clinically distinctive form of cutaneous lupus erythematosus (LE), subacute cutaneous LE, are presented and contrasted to those of patients who have only discoid LE skin lesions. In addition, the clinical significance of autoantibodies to the Ro/SS-A cellular antigen, the serological marker of subacute cutaneous LE, is discussed. The results support our hypothesis that subacute cutaneous LE skin lesions can serve as a marker for a clinically and serologically discrete subset of LE patients whose overall illness is intermediate in severity between that of patients with discoid LE and active systemic LE.
