Abstract
The fashion for plasmapheresis has diminished in recent years; after the initial enthusiasm when it thought to be a universal panacea, came rejection; it was considered to be nothing more than a modern incarnation of blood letting. The general principle of removing noxious substances from the blood was largely responsible for the enthusiasm, but this diminished with time. After several years of scepticism, it is now time to examine the possible or probable indications, and to outline the advantages and inconveniences of this therapy.
